Portugese street artist Vhils has been asked to create a mural for the facade of a new restaurant Gold on Portobello Road in Notting Hill. The location is the former pub named Portobello Gold, which is how this got its name. As part of the opening, portuguese street artist Alexandre Manuel Dias Farto has created this new mural on the fascade, but it has raised concerns in the area and the neighbours are not happy.
The council and neighbours have raised issues because many of this buildings on this part of the road are in bright pastel colours, and this is the only one that sticks out. Notting Hill has had its share of grafitti over the years, so this isn't anything new for the area. However, the main issue seems to be the subject of the artwork. It features a face with two huge eyes that appear to watch you. Many have considered it creepy and not in line with the rest of the street.
The new venue is owned by a consortium led by Nick House, the entrepreneur behind a number of celebrity-friendly venues including Mahiki, a one-time favourite of Prince Harry, The Punch Bowl — co-owned with film director Guy Ritchie — and Bodo’s Schloss, a bar styled as an Austrian ski lodge. It has been reported that singer Ed Sheeran is part of the consortium involved in the rebirth of Portobello Gold.
I have to confess I LOVE Vhils work... not just because he's portuguese, but because this is trully an art that a few have the ability to manage. I've been loving a lot of other art works of his in Lisbon, but I also can understand that it can be quite a shock to have this street art in front of your house, instead of a pretty coloured façade. Althought, it is important to recognise that those in shock are probably the same people that are fed up of all the tourism in excess around Notting Hill. So why not to accept something a little bit different than the usual?...

O artista de rua português Vhils foi convidado a criar um mural para a fachada de um novo restaurante na Portobello Road, em Notting Hill. A localização é o antigo Pub chamado Portobello Gold, nome que ainda se mantém. Como parte da inauguração, o artista de rua português Alexandre Manuel Dias Farto criou este novo mural sobre a fachada, mas despoletou algumas preocupações na zona e os vizinhos não estão muito contentes.
O conselho e os vizinhos levantaram problemas porque muitos destes edifícios nesta parte da rua estão em tons pastéis, e este é o único que se destaca pelo oposto. Notting Hill tem tido a sua dose de grafittis ao longo dos anos, por isso não é tão grande assim a novidade. No entanto, a questão principal parece ser o tema da obra de arte. Possui um rosto com dois enormes olhos que parecem fixar o olhar em nós. Muitos consideram assustador e pouco adequado ao resto da rua.
O novo local é propriedade de um consórcio liderado por Nick House, o empresário por trás de uma série de locais famosos para celebridades, incluindo o Mahiki, um dos favorito do príncipe Harry, The Punch Bowl - co-propriedade do cineasta Guy Ritchie - e Bodo Schloss, um bar de estilo austríaco. Consta que o cantor Ed Sheeran faz parte do consórcio envolvido no renascimento do Portobello Gold.
Pessoalmente, devo confessar que amo o trabalho do Vhils ... não só porque ele é português, mas porque esta é uma arte que muito poucos têm a capacidade e habilidade de conseguir. Eu tenho adorado muitas outras obras de arte dele em Lisboa, mas também consigo compreender em parte que pode ser um choque ter esta arte de rua na frente de casa, em vez de uma fachada bem colorida. Embora seja importante reconhecer que aqueles que se dizem em estado de choque são provavelmente as mesmas pessoas que estão cansadas de todo o turismo em excesso em torno de Notting Hill. Então, por que não aceitar algo um pouco diferente do habitual?...
