Today is the 1st of July. Princess Diana was born on this day in 1961. Diana Spencer was the daughter of Edward John Spencer and Frances Ruth Burke Roche. As we all know, she had an aristocratic upbringing, becoming Lady Diana after her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer in 1975.
Today, the 'People's Princess', as she is known, would have turned 59. She would have been a grandmother of four already. Perhaps she would have remarried, to someone who made sense for her. That didn't happen... Unfortunately, she didn't live to see the men her sons Prince William and Prince Harry would become or the families they had. But, she remains ubiquitous in their lives and her influence on how the royal family pressed forward into the 21st century can still be felt in so many ways.
She envisioned the monarchy one day having "more contact with its people," and that was her raison d'être behind wanting to expose her sons to as many walks of life as possible at an early age.
We may all know a lot about her... After more than 20 years, a lot has been said, a lot has been written... But recent news have revealed a little bit more:
- Princess Diana redesigned the sapphire engagement ring Prince Charles gave her The late Princess of Wales had the iconic sapphire ring redesigned after it was presented to her by Prince Charles when he proposed in 1981 during a private dinner at Buckingham Palace. Initially the blue stone, which is surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds, had just eight prongs, two in each corner. But as little as two years later the ring had received a makeover. While it isn't clear why the additional prongs were added it is likely to be to secure the sapphire. The ring, which now belongs to Kate Middleton after Prince William proposed with it, was created by Garrard & Co and was initially worth £28,000. It is now valued at around £300,000.
-How Did Princess Diana Spend Her Last Birthday One day before she turned 36, Diana appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair and revealed in an interview that she was building a new life for herself and her sons post her divorce from Prince Charles. According to Tina Brown, author of The Diana Chronicles, the next day the princess received 90 bouquets of flowers for her birthday and a phone call in the morning from her son, Prince Harry, who along with his classmates sang her “Happy Birthday.” That evening she attended the 100th-anniversary celebration of the Tate Gallery in London where she was the guest of honor. At the affair, Diana was given even more flowers as well as cards and balloons.
- Princess Diana almost made her debut as movie star Princess Diana agreed to star in The Bodyguard sequel. Kevin Costner has revealed Princess Diana came quite close to featuring in the sequel of The Bodyguard. In the 1992 original, the actor played the title role as former Secret Service agent-turned-bodyguard Frank Farmer who is hired to protect a music star (Rachel Marron), played by Whitney Houston, from an unknown stalker. He revealed it was actually Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson who put them in contact with each other. Speaking of his conversation with the late royal, he continued: “I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question, she goes, ‘Are we going to have like a kissing scene?’...She said it in a very respectful way.".
