Last Sunday, Channel 4 aired on television a documentary that shows a whole new light of Winston Churlchill's life. 'Churchill's Secret Affair' tells the story of a love relationship between the british hero of the Second World War and the high-society socialite Doris Castlerosse, great aunt of the british supermodel Cara Delevingne.
Doris Delevingne was born in London, in 1900, and married the Viscount Castlerosse, an old military captain turned into a columnist of the Sunday Express. This was an unhappy marriage.

O 'Churchill's Secret Affair' conta a história de uma relação de amor entre o herói britânico da Segunda Guerra Mundial e a socialite Doris Castlerosse, tia-avó da supermodelo britânica Cara Delevingne. Doris Delevingne nasceu em Londres, em 1900, e casou-se com o visconde Castlerosse, um antigo capitão militar que se tornou colunista do jornal Sunday Express. Este foi um casamento infeliz.
Well, it all started on the French Riviera in 1933, at the seaside Chateau de l'Horizon, the pleasure palace of the glamorous actress Maxine Elliot, who knew everyone, and threw extravagant summer house-parties. Churchill, in the political wilderness, was one of the guests at the time. Once with his wife, Clementine, a few times without.
It was long rumoured, but now apparently confirmed in a recently-revealed 1985 interview with Churchill’s private secretary, Jock Colville. The tape has been discovered by an American historian, Dr Warren Dockter. The affair is also confirmed by the family of Doris Castleross. And it is also said that Doris had an affair with Andolph Churchill, the son of Winston.
Those days were apparently difficult days to Winston and Clementine's marriage. The documentary says that divorce was maybe something on the table, but everything changed with the beginning of the Second World War. They became a unit again.
And let's remind that Churchill and Clemmie were married for 57 years.
Interesting story... but now I'm looking for reading every page of the new biography Churchill: Walking with Destiny, a book of the journalist and historian Andrew Roberts, to be published next autumn. Roberts have heard the tapes of Jack Colville, but he doesn´t believe in that and he's investigating the whole story...
There's also another book - 'The Mistress of Mayfair' by Lindsy Spence - that tells all the story behind this so special and unlikely friendship between Churchill and Doris Delevingne. A book that I really want to read as well!

Churchill, nos seus anos de maior fervor político, chegou a ser um dos convidados. Uma vez acompanhado pela mulher Clementine, e tantas outras sem ela.
O rumor já existia há muito, mas agora tudo foi aparentemente confirmado através de uma entrevista divulgada recentemente, e datada de 1985, dada pelo secretário particular de Churchill, Jock Colville. A cassete com a entrevista foi descoberta por um historiador americano, Dr. Warren Dockter. Mas, o caso também foi confirmado pela família de Doris Castleross, precisamente neste documentárrio do Channel 4. Também se diz que Doris chegou a ter mais tarde um caso com Andolph Churchill, o filho de Winston.
Aqueles dias foram dias difíceis no casamento de Winston e Clementine. O documentário revela que a hipótese de divórcio chegou a estar em cima da mesa, mas tudo mudou com o início da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Eles tornaram-se novamente uma união.
E vale a pena relembrar que Churchill e Clemmie estiveram casados durante 57 anos.
História interessante ... que me faz ter vontade de ler todas as páginas da nova biografia 'Churchill: Walking with Destiny', um livro do jornalista e historiador Andrew Roberts, que será publicado no próximo outono. Roberts já ouviu as cassetes de Jack Colville, mas pessoalmente não acredita na totalidade desta versão da história e continua a investigar...
Há também outro livro - "A Senhora de Mayfair", de Lindsy Spence - que conta a história por detrás dessa amizade especial e improvável entre Churchill e Doris Delevingne. Um livro que também quero muito ler!
