It's been almost two years since season two of Netflix show The Crown was released. And all miss it! Am I right? This time, in this third season, we will experience a lot of drama, iconic fashion moments and important historical parts.
Even though season two finishes in 1964, season three will begin in the Seventies, where we will meet a slightly older Royal Family, with the Queen and Prince Philip in their mid-forties and Charles and Anne in their early twenties.
It looks like we'll be introduced to Prince Charles's romance with Camilla Parker Bowles, as well as Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon's turbulent marriage. And we will get some important roles of characters we don't usually know a lot, like the incredible life of Prince Philip's mother.
- Prince Philip's mother's extraordinary life will be explored: Princess Alice of Greece was born in 1885 at Windsor Castle, and grew up in the UK, the German Empire, and Greece. Alice was at odds with her royal status, preferring to live without a title and focus her time and efforts on her religion and charity work. Alice, who was born deaf, married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark in 1903, and when Philip was around 10 years old, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and sent to a hospital where she was treated by Sigmund Freud. Princess Alice pleaded her sanity, and tried to leave the sanatorium countless times, before eventually being released in in the mid-30s. Meanwhile, Philip was separated from his four older sisters, Margarita, Theodora, Cecilie and Sophie, and was sent to live in England with his uncles, Lord Louis Mountbatten and George Mountbatten, and his grandmother, the Dowager Marchioness of Milford Haven. When her daughter Cecilie, who was 26, son-in-law Georg Donatus, and two of her grandchildren were killed in an air accident at Ostend, she attended the funeral and reunited with husband Andrew and son Philip for the first time in six years, before returning to Greece on her own to found a nunnery. When the German army invaded Athens during the second world war, Alice hid Jewish widow Rachel Cohen and two of her five children. Back in 1913, Rachel's husband, Haimaki Cohen, had helped King George I of Greece, and in return King George had vowed to offer his services if Cohen should ever need them. Cohen's son asked Alice for help, and she took the family in and saved them from persecution. Alice eventually left her nunnery and moved in with the Queen and Prince Philip at a time when the royal family were facing immense press criticism, after Philip had complained about austerity and pay-cuts affecting the palace during an interview on US television. She then died in Buckingham Palace on 5 December 1969. Those times in Buckingham Palace are believed to be where Prince Philip and Princess Alice re-established their mother and son relationship - she referred to him lovingly as 'Bubbikins' - and Alice's tales of her traumatic past had a profound effect on him.
- Gillian Anderson will play Margaret Thatcher: "I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman. Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era.", said the actress.
- The Crown's creator,Peter Morgan, had meetings with royal family circle to warn them of storylines: basically he had meetings four times a year with "people who are very high ranking and very active within the organisation". 'Respectfully, I tell them what I have in mind and they brace themselves slightly,’ he told to 'The Times'.
- Apparently the Queen watches The Crown: David Rankin-Hunt - The Crown's protocol advisor and a member of the Royal Household - suggested that the acclaimed Netflix series is relatively well-received, but he couldn't confirm whether the Queen has watched any of it. However, Vanessa Kirby - who played Princess Margaret for two seasons - once disclosed to Vanity Fair: "A friend of mine was at a party and didn’t know anyone, so he sidled up to this group who were talking about The Crown, when one said, 'Well, my granny watches it and really likes it.' It slowly dawned on him that the girl was [Princess] Eugenie and her granny was the queen.". Eugenie herself admitted to Harpers Bazaar that she has watched some of the series, saying: "I did watch a couple of episodes of The Crown. It is filmed beautifully. The music is wonderful, the story is beautiful. You feel very proud to watch it. I can't speak for everyone, but that's how I felt when I watched it."
- The cast is all new: Oscar winner Olivia Colman succeeds Claire Foy in the role of Queen Elizabeth II, Helena Bonham Carter takes over as Princess Margaret following Vanessa Kirby, and more. Josh O’Connor will be Prince Charles and Erin Doherty will star as Princess Anne. Replacing Smith as the Duke of Edinburgh is Tobias Menzies, best known from 'Outlander'. 'Game of Thrones' actor Charles Dance will play Philip's uncle Lord Mountbatten, Ben Daniels will portray Armstrong-Jones. Emerald Fennell, who most recently wrote the entire second series of 'Killing Eve', will play Camilla. Emma Corrin will play Lady Diana Spencer.
- The new season picks up in the second half of the twentieth century: during this time both Harold Wilson and Ted Heath become PM. These are also the years that the marriage of Princess Margareth to Armstrong-Jones breaks down (the couple divorced in 1978), so it's likely this will be explored throughout the series.
- The series has longed been estimated to be the most expensive TV series ever made: according to 'The Guardian', The Crown has a budget of £50m per season (which is approximately the cost of six BBC dramas), and that figure continues to rise.
- The fashion moments we may see this season: Princess Margaret meeting The Beatles at the West End premiere of the band's film 'A Hard Day's Night' in the London Pavilion, in 1964, could be one. Princess Margaret in East Africa (1967), Queen Elizabeth II with West German President Heinrich Lubke during her visit to West Germany (1965), Queen Elizabeth II during the Royal Tour of the Bahamas (1966), the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret at Ascot, Queen Elizabeth II crowning her son the Prince of Wales, during his investiture ceremony at Caernarvon Castle (1969), and many other moments you can see in the photo gallery at the end of this article.
