Angela Kelly is a British fashion designer, dressmaker, and milliner, and she has been serving Queen Elizabeth II since 2002. Now, she has written a behind-the-scenes account of her years as the Queen's official dressmaker and friend.
"The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, The Dresser and the Wardrobe" is the title of it and, unusually it was authorised by the monarch. The book delightfully illustrates the pair’s happy and playful relationship, and offers a rare insight into historic state occasions, the preparations for which have, until now, largely remained a mystery to the public. Angela discusses the secrets of Her Majesty's style and outfits:
1. The Queen has someone to wear in her shoes: through the book we can learn that the Queen employs a royal assistant to wear in her new shoes - and Angela she is the "flunky" that does it. "The Queen has very little time to herself and not time to wear in her own shoes, and as we share the same shoe size it makes the most sense this way.", she wrote.
2. The Queen's appearance at Royal Ascot is not all about horses: actually, people place bets on the colour of the monarch's hat. After learning such a bet had been placed one year, Ms Kelly says she agreed with the boss of a bookmaker on a closing time for wagers, and even laid out decoy hats in the palace to avoid the real colour being identified early. "I had a meeting with the owner of Paddy Power at which we agreed that betting on the colour of the Queen's hat would be closed at a certain time to avoid any cheating, but allowed people to carry on guessing the colour of the Queen's hat and perhaps even win a bit of money.", said Kelly.
3. There is an unusual secret behind the royal christening gown: Ms Kelly reveals how "strong" Yorkshire tea helped to recreate a replica of the royal christening gown which was first used for the christening of James, Viscount Severn, in 2008. (...) To make sure it looked authentic we dyed it in Yorkshire tea (the strongest, as we all know), (...) We placed each piece of lace in a small bowl, from the Dressers' kitchen, filled with cool water and a tea bag and left it for about five minutes, checking regularly until the colour was perfect."
4. Her Majesty asked to meet James Bond and to have a line in the movie: in fact the offer for Her Majesty to appear in a skit alongside Daniel Craig's James Bond was considered by the Queen for just "five minutes" before she accepted. "She was very amused by the idea and agreed immediately. I asked then if she would like a speaking part. Without hesitation, Her Majesty replied: 'Of course I must say something. After all, he is coming to rescue me'," (...) "I asked whether she would like to say: 'Good evening, James,' or: 'Good evening, Mr Bond,' and she chose the latter, knowing the Bond films. Within minutes, I was… delivering the good news to [director Danny Boyle] - I think he almost fell off his chair when I said that the Queen's only stipulation was that she could deliver that iconic line: 'Good evening, Mr Bond.'"
5. Greeting Michelle Obama with a hug was 'natural instinct': rumours have been told that the Queen "abandoned" royal protocol when she returned former First Lady Michelle Obama's hug in 2009... "In reality, it was a natural instinct for the Queen to show affection and respect for another great woman, and really there is no protocol that must be adhered to, (...) "When fondness is felt or the host of a State Visit goes to guide Her Majesty up some steps, it truly is about human kindness, and this is something the Queen will always welcome warmly. Anyone who is close to Her Majesty is not a threat and is certainly trusted."
6. The Queen invited Annie Leibovitz to take birthday portraits after TV documentary misunderstanding: "On the day, Her Majesty was scheduled to meet only Annie's daughter and was expecting just a handful of people to be present. When the Queen arrived she was met by nearly fifteen people in the room, standing in a straight line, and many members of the press. A misunderstanding meant that footage was captured and broadcast showing the Queen apparently ‘storming’ out of the photoshoot. This was not an accurate account of what happened. Her Majesty was not ‘storming’ anywhere: she was making her way to the shoot as planned, and hadn't time to meet so many people. I have always felt so bad for Annie about how this was later reported, as she really didn't deserve to be misrepresented in that way.". The BBC was even forced to apologise to the monarch after admitting it had "misrepresented" her in a trailer for a documentary, by suggesting she had stormed out of a photoshoot with the American photographer in 2007. Angela says that after a discussion with the Queen about how they could make amends, they invited Annie back to Windsor Castle to take the official portraits for Her Majesty's 90th birthday in 2016.
7. The Queen's fashion faux pas on royal tour was done on purpose: "We were planning for Her Majesty's upcoming tour of Malaysia, where she would be closing the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. As the weather is so warm over there, it was decided that Her Majesty would wear a dress but no jacket or coat, and she chose a vibrant deep coral for the outfit and matching hat. (...) On the day of the ceremony, I was helping Her Majesty get ready and went to take the hat out of the box in which it had been carefully packed. As soon as I had it in my hands, I knew, deep down, that it was not going to suit the Queen. With a commanding shell-like brim and a very large flower on the reverse, it was certainly an interesting and beautifully made piece, but I had a gut feeling that it would not complement the outfit or enhance Her Majesty's features. As the morning went on, I became increasingly worried, so I decided I had to raise my concern and face the consequences later. So, I waited for the Queen to come into the dressing room, took a deep breath, and said, 'Your Majesty, I don't think you should wear this hat. It is not the right design for you and it won't suit you.' A long silence followed before she eventually looked up and said, 'Well, it's a bit late now. What else can I wear? I must wear it.' Although I admired her pragmatic approach, I was insistent. I told her I had been examining the hat from all angles and that it would be better worn back to front. The Queen couldn’t believe that this would work. I told her that, if she did not believe me, she should consult the Duke of Edinburgh, as he always tells her the truth. At this point, I left the room feeling somewhat terrified, as you can imagine. Before long, Her Majesty called me back. She had consulted His Royal Highness and, after an amusing conversation, in which I imagine The Duke didn't hold back, the Queen had decided to wear the hat the wrong way around, as I had suggested."
8. The Queen has amusing way to keep costs down on royal tours: "The Queen likes to support local people wherever she visits, but we have a particular tradition whenever we go to Singapore. There’s never enough time to go to the market, but as Her Majesty loves Singaporean silk, local tradespeople bring their stalls to the airport when she is due to arrive so that she can personally browse all they have to offer. We wander through the stalls – Her Majesty leading the way, followed by me and the Ladies-in-Waiting. Something will catch the Queen's eye – usually a vibrant fabric, given her fondness for bright colours – and she’ll gesture to me. Our selections are always ready for collection on our return, when it's my responsibility to pay the bill. A few years ago, after Her Majesty's Ladies-in-Waiting and I had collected our parcels of silk, I went to make the payment and the stall owners advised me that I could claim tax back on the purchase. The Queen is always keen to keep costs down, so off I went in search of someone who could help. A few minutes later, as I was getting the tax back, another member of the royal staff rushed up to me in a panic, shouting that we had to go straight away as the plane was leaving right that second. Soon I was running across the tarmac, flying up the steps to the plane just in time. I was so thrilled, I shouted over the plane's engines a phrase I am sure the Queen does not hear very often: 'I've got your tax back!' The look on the Queen's face was priceless as I handed her the tax refund."
9. Elocution lessons: "Listening to and speaking with Her Majesty, I would think, how wonderful to be able to speak so nicely and, after a few months of working with her, I plucked up the courage to ask if she knew anyone who might give me the elocution lessons I'd wanted for so long. The look on the Queen's face was a picture. She simply asked, 'Why?' After I had explained, she said that it was not necessary. I asked again and again, but she still refused… I then told Her Majesty my new idea: 'You can give me elocution lessons! You can tell me what I say that's correct and what I say that isn't.' The Queen could probably sense that I wasn't going to give up, so she instructed me to say one word: 'furious'. 'Fyer-ri-ous,' I responded. 'No, fee-or-ree-ous,' said Her Majesty, in perfect received pronunciation. After several more attempts, I finally cracked it and Her Majesty exclaimed, 'Yes!' (...) And that was it – my one and only elocution lesson, and from the Queen herself. From then on, I listened and tried my best to speak properly – even adding an aitch to words where it didn't exist – but in the end I gave up: it was just too much effort. Ever since I've stuck to being myself, a girl from Liverpool and a proud Liverpudlian, too."
10. The Queen only uses a makeup artist for one annual occasion: it is only when being filmed for her Christmas broadcast that the monarch calls on the services of makeup artist Marilyn Widdess, with Kelly noting, ‘You might be surprised to know that this is the only occasion throughout the year when Her Majesty does not do her own makeup.’

O livro ilustra deliciosamente o relacionamento alegre e brincalhão de ambas e oferece uma rara visão das ocasiões históricas do estado, cujos preparativos permaneceram até agora um mistério para o público. Angela discute os segredos do estilo e as roupas de Sua Majestade:
1. A rainha tem alguém para experimentar os seus sapatos: através do livro, podemos aprender que a rainha tem uma assistente real para usar os seus sapatos novos - e Angela é a "lacaia" que o faz. "A rainha tem muito pouco tempo para si mesma e não tem tempo para usar os seus próprios sapatos, e como compartilhamos o mesmo tamanho de sapato, faz mais sentido assim", escreveu ela.
2. A aparição da rainha no Royal Ascot não se resume a cavalos: na verdade, as pessoas apostam na cor do chapéu da monarca. Depois de saber que tal aposta foi feita, Kelly diz que concordou com o chefe de uma casa de apostas no horário de encerramento das apostas e até colocou chapéus de chamariz no palácio para evitar que a cor escolhida fosse identificada cedo demais. "Tive uma reunião com o proprietário da Paddy Power, na qual concordamos que apostar na cor do chapéu da rainha terminaria num determinado momento para evitar fugas de informação, mas permiti que as pessoas continuassem adivinhando a cor do chapéu da rainha e que talvez até ganhassem um pouco de dinheiro. ", disse Kelly.
3. Há um segredo incomum por detrás do vestido de batizado real: Kelly revela como o chá Yorkshire "forte" ajudou a recriar uma réplica do vestido de batizado real que foi usado pela primeira vez no batizado de James, visconde de Severn, em 2008. (. ..) Para garantir que parecesse autêntico, tingimos no chá de Yorkshire (o mais forte, como todos sabemos), (...) Colocámos cada pedaço de renda numa tigela pequena, na cozinha, cheia de água fria e um saquinho de chá e deixámos por cerca de cinco minutos, verificando regularmente até que a cor ficasse perfeita ".
4. Sua Majestade pediu para conhecer James Bond e ter uma fala no filme: de facto, a oferta de Sua Majestade aparecer numa cena ao lado de James Bond, de Daniel Craig, foi considerada pela rainha apenas "cinco minutos" antes de ela o aceitar. "Ela ficou muito divertida com a ideia e concordou imediatamente. Perguntei-lhe se gostaria de falar. Sem hesitar, Sua Majestade respondeu: 'É claro que devo dizer alguma coisa. Afinal, ele vem para me salvar'". (...) "Perguntei se ela gostaria de dizer: 'Boa noite, James' ou: 'Boa noite, Sr. Bond', e ela escolheu a segunda, conhecendo os filmes de Bond. Em questão de minutos, eu estava a dar a boa notícia ao [realizador Danny Boyle] - acho que ele quase caiu da cadeira quando eu disse que o único requisito da rainha era que ela pudesse dizer esta frase icónica: 'Boa noite, senhor Bond'. "
5. Cumprimentar Michelle Obama com um abraço foi um "instinto natural": na altura, espalharam-se rumores de que a rainha "abandonou" o protocolo real quando retribuiu o abraço da ex-primeira-dama Michelle Obama em 2009 ... "Na realidade, foi um instinto natural para a rainha demonstrar afeição e respeito por outra grande mulher, e realmente não existe um protocolo que deva ser respeitado, (...) "Quando a afeição é sentida ou o anfitrião de uma Visita de Estado ajuda a Sua Majestade a subir umas escadas, trata-se verdadeiramente de bondade humana, e isso é algo que a rainha sempre receberá calorosamente. Quem está perto de Sua Majestade não é uma ameaça e certamente é confiável. "
6. A rainha convidou Annie Leibovitz para tirar retratos de aniversário após um mal-entendido nos documentários da TV: "No dia, Sua Majestade estava orientada para conhecer apenas a filha de Annie e esperava que apenas algumas pessoas estivessem presentes. Quando a rainha chegou, ela foi recebida por quase quinze pessoas na sala, em pé em linha reta, e muitos membros da imprensa.Um mal entendido significou que as imagens captadas e transmitidas mostraram a rainha aparentemente 'a abandonar' a sessão de fotos. Este não foi um relato exato do que aconteceu. Sua Majestade não estava "fugindo" de lugar algum: ela estava indo para as filmagens como planeado e não tinha tempo para conhecer tantas pessoas. Eu sempre me senti tão mal pela Annie perante a forma como isso foi relatado mais tarde, ela realmente não merecia ser deturpada daquela maneira. " A BBC foi forçada a pedir desculpas à rainha depois de admitir que a "deturpou" num trailer do documentário, sugerindo que ela havia saído da produção fotográfica chateada com a fotógrafa americana em 2007. Angela diz que depois disso tentou ver com a rainha como poderiam corrigir o mal entendido, e convidaram Annie de volta ao Castelo de Windsor para tirar os retratos oficiais do aniversário de 90 anos de Sua Majestade em 2016.
7. O 'deslize' de moda da rainha durante uma tour real foi propositado: "Estavamos a planear a próxima tour de Sua Majestade na Malásia, onde ela estaria presente no encerramento dos Jogos da Commonwealth em Kuala Lumpur. Como o clima é quente por lá, ficou decidido que Sua Majestade usaria um vestido, mas não casaco ou sobretudo, e ela escolheu um tom coral profundo e vibrante para a roupa e um chapéu condizente. (...) No dia da cerimónia, eu estava a ajudar Sua Majestade a preparar-se e fui tirar o chapéu da caixa em que ele foi cuidadosamente embalado. Quando o tinha nas mãos, percebi que ele não serviria à rainha.Com uma aba em forma de concha e uma flor muito grande no verso, certamente era uma peça interessante e feita na perfeição, mas tive a sensação de que não complementaria a roupa nem melhoraria o look de Sua Majestade. Com o decorrer da manhã, fiquei cada vez mais preocupada, então decidi colocar a minha consternação e enfrentar as consequências. A rainha entrou no provador, respirou fundo e eu disse: 'Majestade, acho que não deveria usar este chapéu. Não é o design certo para si e não combina consigo. Um longo silêncio se seguiu antes que ela finalmente erguesse os olhos e dissesse: 'Bem, já é um pouco tarde agora. O que mais posso vestir? Eu tenho que o usar.' Embora eu admirasse a sua abordagem pragmática, fui insistente. Disse-lhe que estava a examinar o chapéu de todos os ângulos e que seria melhor usá-lo de trás para a frente. A rainha não queria acreditar que isso iria funcionar. Então, disse-lhe que, se ela não acreditasse em mim, deveria consultar o duque de Edimburgo, pois ele sempre dizia a verdade. Nesse momento, saí da sala, sentindo-me um pouco aterrorizada, como podem imaginar. Em pouco tempo, Sua Majestade ligou-me de volta. Ela havia consultado a Sua Alteza Real e, depois de uma conversa divertida, na qual imagino que o duque não se conteve, a rainha decidiu usar o chapéu da maneira errada, como sugeri.
8. A rainha tem uma maneira divertida de manter os custos baixos nas tours reais: "A rainha gosta de apoiar a população local onde quer que ela vá, mas temos uma tradição específica sempre que vamos a Singapura. Nunca há tempo suficiente para ir ao mercado, mas como Sua Majestade adora a seda de Singapura, os comerciantes locais trazem as suas barracas para o aeroporto no momento em que ela chega para que possa ver pessoalmente tudo o que eles têm para oferecer. Vamos passear pelas barracas - Sua Majestade liderando o caminho, seguida por mim e pelas damas de companhia. Alguma coisa chama a atenção da rainha - geralmente um tecido vibrante, dado o seu gosto por cores vivas - e ela faz-me sinal. Aquilo que escolhemos fica sempre pronto para recolha no nosso regresso, sendo que é da minha responsabilidade pagar. Há uns anos atrás, depois de as damas de companhia de Sua Majestade e eu termos recolhido os nossos pacotes de seda, fui fazer o pagamento e os donos das barracas avisaram-me que eu poderia pedir o reembolso no acto da compra. A rainha está sempre disposta a manter os custos baixos, então fui procurar alguém que pudesse ajudar. Alguns minutos depois, quando eu recebia o reembolso, outro membro da equipa real correu até mim em pânico, gritando que tínhamos que ir imediatamente, pois o avião estava a sair naquele exato segundo. Rapidamente corri pela pista, subindo as escadas do avião mesmo a tempo. Fiquei tão entusiasmada que gritei sobre os motores do avião uma frase que tenho a certeza de que a rainha não ouve com muita frequência: 'Estou com seu reembolso!' O olhar da rainha foi impagável, quando lhe entreguei o reembolso do imposto. "
9. Lições de dicção: "Poder ouvir e falar com Sua Majestade, fez-me pensar o quão maravilhoso seria poder falar tão bem e, depois de alguns meses a trabalhar com ela, ganhei coragem de lhe perguntar se conhecia alguém que me pudesse dar as lições de dicção que eu tanto desejava há tanto tempo. A cara da rainha foi inesquecível. Ela simplesmente perguntou: 'Porquê?' Depois de lhe explicar, ela disse-me que não era necessário. Perguntei várias vezes, mas ela continuava a recusar... Contei, então, à Sua Majestade a minha nova ideia: 'Você pode dar-me aulas de dicção! Pode dizer-me o que eu digo corretamente e o que digo errado'. A rainha provavelmente sentiu que eu não ia desistir, então lá me pediu simplesmente que dissesse uma palavra: 'furioso'. 'Fyer-ri-ous', respondi. 'Não, fee-or-ree-ous,' disse Sua Majestade, com uma pronúncia perfeita. Várias tentativas depois, eu finalmente consegui e a rainha exclamou 'Sim!' (...) e assim foi – a minha primeira e única lição de dicção, dada pela própria rainha. A partir dali, fui ouvindo e tentando o meu melhor para falar corretamente – mesmo adicionando pequenos detalhes às palavras, onde eles não existiam – mas no final desisti, era demasiado esforço. O importante era que eu continuasse a ser eu mesma, uma rapariga de Liverpool."
10. A rainha só usa uma maquilhadora para uma ocasião anual: é somente ao ser filmada para a sua transmissão de Natal que a monarca chama os serviços da maquilhadora Marilyn Widdess: "Certamente se surpreenderá ao saber que essa é a única ocasião durante todo o ano em que Sua Majestade não faz sua própria maquilhagem.
