A controversial new London skyscraper dubbed “the Tulip” has been given planning approval, paving the way for the construction of the second tallest building in Western Europe after the Shard.
Designed by Foster + Partners, the 305-metre tower in the City of London will feature a viewing platform with rotating pods, a restaurant and a sky bar, and is expected to attract 1.2 million visitors a year.
This week plans for the building were approved by the City of London Corporation, with committee members voting 18-7 in favour of the tower on Bury Street in the Square Mile.
There will also be eight floors of viewing platforms, with double decker lifts to take you up to each floor. There’ll also be plenty of bars and restaurants, naturally, along with an education centre (billed as a “classroom in the sky”) that will host 40,000 state school pupils a year.
Work on the Tulip could start as early as 2020, with the hope of opening to the public in 2025.
However, there are people saying that the Tower would damage London’s historic views. This is a long discussion... but aren't they screwing London's landscape? Aren't there enough modern, exuberant skycrapers in the City?

Esta semana, os planos para o prédio foram aprovados pela City of London Corporation, com membros do comité a votarem 18-7 a favor da torre na Bury Street (Square Mile).
Haverá também oito andares de plataformas de observação, com elevadores de dois andares para levá-lo a cada piso. Também haverá muitos bares e restaurantes, naturalmente, bem como um centro de educação (classificado como uma "sala de aula no céu") que abrigará 40.000 alunos de diversas escolas do país por ano.
Os trabalhos no Tulip podem começar já em 2020, com a esperança de ser aberto ao público em 2025.
No entanto, há pessoas a defender que a torre irá danificar as vistas históricas de Londres. Esta é uma longa discussão... mas não estarão mesmo a estragar a paisagem da cidade? Não existem já suficientes arranha-céus modernos e exuberantes na City?
