Somerset House was built in the late 1860s and is now residence to over a hundred tenants, comprising a large and diverse collection of creative organisations and artists including the British Fashion Council, 7Wonder, Hofesh Shechter Company and the Royal Society of Literature.
Somerset House is also a very popular filming location with its exterior featuring in several big budget Hollywood films. Among these include two James Bond films ("GoldenEye" and "Tomorrow Never Dies"), "The Duchess", "Sherlock Holmes" or Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow".
In the winter the central courtyard is home to a popular open air ice rink, as seen during the opening credits of the 2003 film "Love Actually". I have to confess I was very anxious to get here during Christmas time, and I was not wrong at all. The atmosphere is fascinating. Despite I come to London for more then 10 years, I've never been here before.
And I have to say it was really cold this day... I spent a few hours around Southbanks Christmas Market and then I crossed the bridge, just to find I was so close to Somerset House. I was shaking cold, but no one would stop me from stalking this pink square. People there are having real fun, no matter the age! We cans see children, but also older ones trying their best dancing around the ice ring.
And what about that Christmas Tree? Wow... it's just marvellous!! Well done Fortnum&Mason once again for this decoration! There are lots of tempting extras as well, like the Fortnum's Lodge offering champagne, mulled wine, raclette, cheese fondue, smoked salmon and mince pies. Already hungry? lol
The Christmas Arcade brings posh shopping from Fortnum & Mason. This year with a focus on all things chocolate - and guests can admire the skaters with drink in hand at the Skate Lounge, both of which can be accessed without a ticket (which is very nice!).

No inverno, o pátio central abriga uma das mais famosas pistas de gelo ao ar livre, tal como todos vimos aparecer durante os créditos de abertura do filme "Love Actually", de 2003. Eu tenho que confessar que estava muito ansiosa para conhecer este espaço durante o Natal, e não estava errada. A atmosfera é fascinante. Apesar de eu já vir a Londres há mais de 10 anos, a verdade é que nunca havia estado aqui antes.
E tenho que dizer que este foi um dia muito frio... Passei algumas horas no mercado de Natal de Southbanks e depois atravessei a ponte, descobrindo que estava tão perto da Somerset House. Eu tremia de frio, mas ninguém me ia impedir de chegar a esta praça cor de rosa. Ali, as pessoas estão de facto a divertir-se, não importa a idade! Podemos ver crianças, mas também pessoas mais velhas, tentando dançar ao longo da pista de gelo.
E aquela árvore de Natal? Uau ... é maravilhosa!! Excelente trabalho o dos armazéns Fortnum & Mason (que todos os anos patrocinam) por mais esta decoração! Há muitos extras tentadores, como o Lodge do Fortnum, que oferece champanhe, vinho quente, raclette, fondue de queijo, salmão fumado e tortas de carne moída. Já está com fome? lol
O Christmas Arcade oferece compras chiques da Fortnum & Mason. Este ano, com foco em todas as coisas de chocolate - e os hóspedes podem admirar os skatistas com bebida na mão no Skate Lounge, ambos os quais são de acesso livres, sem bilhete (o que é muito bom!).
